Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

After being messed about with his score for Halloween: H20, it's nice to see how John Ottman functions within the horror genre. You know you're getting into familiar waters when the poster art is effectively Jaws--but with a huge croc. Ottman adopts a unifying filmic theme that is completely flexible in its use; sometimes signifying a journey's start or reuniting characters. It descends into murky depths for the wily beast ("Here He Comes!"), and ascends for an heroic fanfare to open "Reluctant Passengers". Both these examples are written for extremes of brass. As rasping and dirge-like as possible for the first, and screech trumpet for the second. The horror standards are here: shock explosions in the middle of a quiet passage ("Hector's Mind"), atonal percussion, and all the rest. But it's his theme which holds these usual clichés together. Being a film editor as well as a composer (The Usual Suspects, Apt Pupil), this mono-thematic approach is a dramatic support technique he knows will work to his advantage through inevitable re-cutting. --Paul Tonks
