5.0 out of 5 stars Dazzling & Sincere Performance by Janis, 19 Oct 2009
By Scriabinmahler (UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Janis' playing is dazzling and explosive, but never bombastic or self-indulgent, but completely truthful to music and has depth and delicacy matched by few. In slow sections, his phrasing is magical with breath-takingly shaded timbres. This is the kind of performance I always return to for its sincerity of music making. This certainly is one of Janis' greatest recordings, alongside his super-human account of Liszt Concerto on Mercury. Boston SO, under Charles Munch, plays superbly with vivid orchestral colours and much vigour.

Brailowsky's heart-felt account of the 2nd is also impressive and deeply poetic, if not as technically refined as Janis.
