Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Murray Perahia may have gone on to prove himself in all sorts of repertoire, but to many he's still the Mozart man par excellence. This complete cycle, begun when Perahia was in his 20s, was recorded over nearly a decade and since its completion has stood as a yardstick by which all others are judged. A flawless cycle is almost a contradiction in terms but this one comes very close, Perahia directing an ever-finer ECO from the piano, relishing the chamber- musical qualities as the piano duets now with the bassoon, now clarinet, now full orchestra. Perahia is an instinctive player, but a thoughtful one too, his silver-toned, fresh approach paying dividends whether in the early experimentation of No. 9, K271 or the grandeur of No. 25, K503. The piano is a Steinway, the strings are modern, but don't be put off by this--a more natural and sympathetic Mozartian you won't find. This is a bargain that deserves a place in every music- lover's collection. --Harriet Smith

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime Mozart., 29 May 2003
By Jack Tan (Singapore) - See all my reviews
Murray Perahia's Mozart is totally natural and true to the composer's intentions without any idiosyncracies. Mr Perahia plays Mozart with eloquence and simplicity, which allows Mozart's genius to speak for itself, something most pianists do not take care to do.

Perahia's set reminds me of an older set by Geza Anda, which also draws listeners with its simple and direct interpretation, but Perahia has an added poetic quality that gives more pleasure to the listener.

Daniel Barenboim's version (where he too directs the English Chamber Orchestra) is recommended too. It is very spontaneous playing that has plenty of vitality but purists might find the pianist over-exerting his personality a tad too much occasionally. The same can be said for Andras Schiff's version, where he is not totally comfortable to let the music speak for itself. But it is still very beautiful and sensitive playing.

After saying so much, I will still recommend the Perahia version as the definitive version for anyone wanting a complete set of Mozart piano concerti. If you care deeply for Mozart, you would want an interpretation that is simple, eloquent, but at the same time sensitive and poetically aware of the natural beauty of Mozart's beautiful way of speaking with music. In Perahia, you have all of these.
