Product Description

From Amazon.com

The Tchaikovsky offers dazzling technical challenges and heart-on-sleeve emotional ups and downs. The Mendelssohn is Olympian, cool, beautifully formed--music that is immediately recognizable as the work of the composer who produced the magical Midsummer Night's Dream music. Jascha Heifetz is equally at home with Tchaikovsky's fervor and Mendelssohn's calm. --Joe McLellan

5.0 out of 5 stars The same vision through different eyes., 15 May 2006

Not sure what they teach or listen to in music lessons at school these days, but Gustav Holst's The Planet's Suite was a favourite when I used to go. And it was and is a favourite for the right reasons, as everyone, from punks and goths to biker's and heavy metaller's, can find something within this more-famous-than-any-other classic(al) piece of music. Yet in our day we had no other option but to listen to the orchestral version, as there was no alternative; until 1976, that is, when Japanese keyboard wizard, Isao Tomita, recorded this fabulously up-dated version. And this CD has been mastered for the surround-sound systems that will one day be commonplace, but for those fortunate enough to own these dynamics, then you'd best get this album, as it's a mind-blower even in lowly stereo! Yes, Tomita saw beyond Holst's vision, yet through the same eyes, and whilst keeping the basic structures of these long enduring pieces, has bolstered them with sounds Gustav could have only imagined in his wildest dreams. From the incredible raw-roots of such a classic classical suite, Tomita has nurtured each planet like a child of his own to bring them way ahead of their time. And even now, 30 years on, this CD sits alongside the original like a 21st Century brother - quite an amazing album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sympathetic electronic exposition of The Planets, 24 Sep 2003
This review is from: The Planets (Audio CD)
This album by synthesiser maestro Isao Tomita should be in any classical or rock collection. The version of Mars is truly chilling as wave upon wave of electronic battleships deliver awesome sonic payloads. Just try and listen to the version of Jupiter and Saturn on a powerful system as you hear the relentless march of time and the approach of the reaper. You can bet your friends that they can't hear this cranked up and keep their eyes closed such is the imagery it conjures from the dark;it is quite disorienting and truly terrifying listening.

Having heard this most wonderfull peice many moons ago I was enthralled to find it at amazon.Tometa has opened up a new world of sound and enlightenment through the ears,so if you are into music from beyond the stars and fancy a lively jaunt around the solar system in your own living room this one is not to miss.It may be not far off of being thirty years old now,Tometa's version that is but like the heavens themselves and the original peice it shall remain infinate in the pleasure it gives every time I listen.
