5.0 out of 5 stars A top- value collection of violin encore pieces, 3 Sep 2001
This is one of the best violin compilations I know. The producer spared giving us sawn-off pieces of works (such as Mendelssohn's violin concerto, slow movement) and each piece stands alone in its own right. There is a good collection of some of Decca's top violin artists, both younger and older: Kyung Wha Chung, Alfredo Campoli, Ruggiero Ricci and Kennedy are the big names. In addition we are also treated to the less well-known but very fine playing of British violinist Ralph Holmes, who gives us marvellous accounts of some of Kreisler's violin standards. Kyung Wha Chung is superb in the Saint-Saens Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso and in two Elgar salon pieces. Kennedy gives us a heartfelt rendering of Massenet's "Meditation". Campoli sparkles in Wieniawski and Sarasate and Ricci finishes off with characteristic dash and bravura in Paganini and Sarasate. The recording quality is good or excellent, ranging as it does from the late 1950s to the mid 1980s.

This is a superb introduction to "the World of the Violin" (as the CD is entitled) for both novices and experienced listeners of violin music.
