Amazon.co.uk Review
Cover bands often make for a great, drunken party night out; it's far rarer that they translate enthusiasm successfully onto vinyl. The Commitments succeed where others fail because (i) they never make the fatal mistake of trying to duplicate the original, (ii) they have such an obvious passion for their craft, and (iii) in Andrew Strong they have a great, gritty,
Joe Cocker-style frontman. (The Blues Brothers, for example, fall down badly on this last front.)
Volume 2 is partly songs from the eponymous movie and partly new recordings. Strong's attempts to grapple with Little Milton's "Grits Ain¹t Groceries" and
Otis Redding's "Sad Song" are a delight to hear, while Angeline Bell does herself proud on a ribald version of "Too Many Fish In The Sea". A surprisingly consistent collection.
