LOVE HURTS is the Cher album for the beginning of the 90's. First released in 1990, it was after reissued with different artwork and bonustrack THE SHOOP SHOOP SONG. This is the final album from the Geffen trilogy CHER/HEART OF STONE/LOVE HURTS and Cher's rock sound is here at its most mature point. The song selection couldn't work better, the vocal performances are especially inspired and a very positive feeling goes through all of these songs, even if almost every single one of them talks about unrequited love. LOVE HURTS, I'LL NEVER STOP LOVING YOU and WHEN LOVERS BECOME STRANGERS are very strong ballads and as romantic and sorrowfull as they get. FIRES OF EDEN could have been a hit and it deserved a steaming video to be added to Cher's collection. WHEN LOVE CALLS YOUR NAME, COULD'VE BEEN YOU and WHO YOU GONNA BELIEVE are good-vibration uptempo rock songs. The hit singles were THE SHOOP SHOOP SONG, SAVE UP ALL YOUR TEARS and LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING. At this point Cher was far from her first effort for Geffen Records, where her sound was very much "Bon-Jovi-oriented". Here, while maintaining some of the producers and composer Dianne Warren, the singer accomplished a personal sound. And even producer Bob Rock, best known for Metallica's Black Album, gave her a hand. This is really worth having. If there is an essencial album by Cher, this is it.

SAVE UP ALL YOUR TEARS sounds as great as 13 years ago when the album hit the road! I see no reason why it is casted as a bonus material in her Farewell Tour DVD, was it meant to be outstanding or dismissable? This is definitely one of her best if someone has to shortlist 40 original songs out of her entire 40 decades of career!

Although many tracks here are the usual Cher's loud, boombastic stuff but there is a dignity in her powerful womanly vocal. LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING, penned by the legendary Diane Warren as one of the leading tracks here, sounds clearly why Cher is still one of the alpha-female voices that got what it takes to carry such a strong love rock ballad.

My personal 2 other favorites are WORLD WITHOUT HEROES and WHO YOU'RE GONNA BELIEVE. The former is a classic 80's metal inspired dark material, the latter is mixed uptempo rock full with rhythmic acoustic on the background.

Put this record on road and have a good ride.

Cher was 45 when she recorded Love Hurts, which provided her with her biggest hit in years, The Shoop Shoop Song, an iiresistable lifter that made one appreciate your radio again all those years ago. Other interesting material includes the Kiss song from 1981, World Without Heroes (co-written by Lou Reed), and the title track which was a hit for Nazareth back in 1976. Supported by a host of worthy musicians and producers, she sings from the gut. As she said at the time: "You can either swim or die at certain points in your career. I swam. I'm a gutsy kind of gal." And we are the richer for that.
