5.0 out of 5 stars "Like a human being" (part 1), 31 Jan 2009
By J. Severidt "jornfin" (Rovaniemi, Finland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Finnish composer Jean Sibelius once said to Wilhelm Kempff: "You do not play like a pianist. You play like a human being." That about sums it up. The 1st, 4th and (particularly) 5th Beethoven piano concert are the pinnacle of musical culture, as far as I am concerned. Nothing else (except for Beethoven's violin concert) moves me quite as deeply. At some point, I had six different recordings of the cycle; eventually I sold all but two: This one and the Brendel/ Rattle/ Vienna Philharmonics recording.
The Brendel is much newer, the sound quality is superior and Brendel brings out the drama in the 2nd movements fantastically. Still, this is the recording I play the most. (And that is in spite of the fact that recording quality matters a lot to me. This recording is not bad, but it doesn't quite match the latter one for dynamics and detail.)
This is Beethoven at his most human, and humane. And it is the more touching because of it.
A milestone, if ever there was one.

P.S.: This has been one of my most treasured possessions for years - but please don't buy it! DG has released these recordings again, restoring them with their "original image bit processing", and that is the release you want to get. It also includes Schneiderhan's reading of the violin concerto plus some other stuff. It sells under Beethoven: Complete Concertos Vol. 1 and 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the reasons why classical music still exists ..., 18 Nov 2003
I was originally unsure whether or not to buy this box set, but I have never looked back since. This is another of the main reasons that Classical music is still so popular : Without Beethoven's music, classical music would probably have only tottered between "grandezza" and "frivoltà".
The Deutsche Grammophon Box Set is of a usual high standard with an interesting booklet.
A must for both beginners and experts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Magical, 10 Jun 2009
By Mr. D. A. Littlewood (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
One of the great sets. There are other ways of playing this music but no-one has ever matched Wilhelm Kempff in terms of magic, unless it was Kempff himself in his earlier set. Here is playing of the highest order, superbly accompanied. Kempff plays his own cadenzas, which upsets some people, but why not? You can get Beethoven's own on other sets. Worth a place in anyone's library for the sheer originality of the playing.

Beethoven's piano concertos are all masterpieces. It is only 4 & 5 that really break the Mozartian mould but all five are wonderful pieces of music in their own right. Read more
