5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, sheer bliss, 18 Nov 1999
The skill of Adams, the faultless piano of Rhodes, seldom is one treated to such style & class. One can only hope that this is the start of a long standing partnership between these two virtuoso players, this is real music. If you are fortunate enough to purchase this CD, also buy Priest on the Run by Red Priest, featuring Messrs Adams & Rhodes, a refreshing view of Vivaldi which will make you smile, tap your toes to the beat, and send a shiver of delight down your spine - MAGNIFICENT!

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful disc of recorder music, 23 Feb 2000

If your view of the recorder is of grubby little girls making their first attempts to grapple with a musical instrument, then put that out of your mind. It has a haunting quality and this collection of pieces shows it off well. Norman Fulton's Scottish Suite is no mere haggis-and-kilts music - the Nocturne is very beautiful. Rubbra, Bowen, Lennox Berkeley and Dodgson are all underrated British composers, whereas Gregson will be familiar to lovers of brass band music. Donald Swann is none other than the composer of Monarch of the Road and The Gasman Cometh.

The Rubbra is wholly characterisic. York Bowen's Sonata is perhaps not so memorable but Berkeley's Sonatina is delightful, redolent of Poulenc in its rhythmic and melodic qualities. Gregson's Three Matisse Impressions leave the world of the Black Dyke Mills Band far behind and is quite magical. Stephen Dodgson's Shine and Shade is a set of variations, strongly contrasted as the title suggests. A fine piece. Finally, Donald Swann's Rhapsody from Within is a genial piece, with the recorder imitating the swanee whistle in the last movement.

Piers Adams and Julian Rhodes play faultlessly, the recording is atmospheric and the notes are good. Highly recommended.

Gavin Bullock
