2.0 out of 5 stars One for the music historian, 2 Jun 2001
By A Customer
On the NAXOS Historical label, the original recordings of the Berlin State Opera Orchestra date from 1928-29, with Erich Kleiber on the podium. Objectively, the performance of the 'New World' symphony in terms of dynamics and technique is as good as any modern recording of this very popular piece. However, for those used to modern digital recording, with its lush - often clinical - sound, the quality of these recordings will be unacceptable. Generally there is a deal of background noise, and the spectrum of the sound is 'thin' which proves distracting throughout, at least to this listener. The inclusion of the cello concerto in Bminor, makes an attractive combination - which is difficult to find in modern recordings. Although a fine performance from Feuermann, nevertheless the same comments apply. The bottom line - a recording for the connoisseur of historical performance only
