I've been reexamining my feelings about Bach recently. No, old Johann is not mathematical or mechanical - he is passionate, playful, meditative and supremely accessible. You just need to find a performer able and willing to do him justice. This is most true of the solo and chamber works (get a half-decent choir and the great cantata choruses run by themselves). So it's Rosalyn Tureck on piano and, now that I've discovered him, Ralph Kirshbaum on cello .Warm sound, beauty of tone, poise and intelligence, an understanding of Bach's musical language and phrasing, and a desire to communicate all his moods. Buy this CD and enliven those boring washing-up/ironing/tidying-your-desk moments.

This is the best recording of the Bach suites I've ever heard! Mr.Kirshbaum's recording of these suites are done with great taste, adding his own signature to the pieces without being distasteful. Each note has life and one can really sense the overall architecture of the individual dance movements. If you don't already own a copy of the Bach cello suites, this recording would be a good starting point (alongside the benchmark recordings by Anner Bylsma and Pablo Casals). Very highly recommended!
