Emil von Sauer as a composer (as opposed to virtuoso pianist) was rescued from historical oblivion in 1995 by Stephen Hough's award-winning disc of Sauer's first piano concerto (on Hyperion). Hough moved on to more mainstream repertoire, but Oleg Marshev on Danacord has quietly recorded a cycle of Sauer's piano works as well as the second piano concerto. This disc was the first to be issued in Danacord's series and is the first of two covering the 29 "Etudes de Concert".

Sauer was one of those turn of the century composer-pianists who enjoyed immense fame when alive but whose stars waned as their work fell out of fashion and taste moved on. Sauer's Etudes are as fluent and well-crafted, if ultimately pretty ephemeral, as you would expect from a pupil of Liszt. It is carefree, melodic music that makes huge demands on the performer in order to tickle the ears of the listener. Sauer's music lacks the depth and emotion of, for example, Rachmaninov or Scriabin but it can more than hold its own against the work of other late Romantic virtuosos such as Dohnanyi, Scharwenka, Moskowski or Godowsky. Some of the 20 Etudes on this disc explore both technical challenges while others seek to evoke the image behind their descriptive titles (such as the delightful "Sighing Breezes" and the galloping "A Cheval").

Marshev is completely inside Sauer's idiom, and the fearful octave leaps and intricate fingerwork hold no terrors for him. He gives these pieces a freshness and dignity that might easily elude other pianists. There are no revelations in this music, but it is all impeccably crafted and a pleasure to listen to. This disc will be enjoyed by anyone with with an interest in the by-ways of late Romantic piano work or who enjoys barnstorming piano-playing.
