ONE VOICE documents Barbra Streisand's 1986 performance at her Malibu home. Given in order to raise money and awarenessfor a variety of causes ("I could no longer remain silent",she says, in the face of starvation, threats to the environment, nuclear weapons), this was her first full-length concert in some 20 years. Ever the consummate performer, her unwavering musicality once again shines through, and no one knows better how to deliver an emotional wallop. Recent hits, such as "Evergreen" and "Somewhere", co-mingle gracefully withold Streisand standbys, such as "People" and "Happy Days Are Here Again", all executed with the utmost conviction and passion.
The most poignant moment during the performance is her dedication of "Over The Rainbow" to the memory of JudyGarland, followed by a rendering of the song so loving as to make Garland proud. Streisand finishes with a rather introspective version of "America The Beautiful", cautiously offering hope for the future. It's easy to be cynical about her reasons for this concert (especially with tickets running 2500 dollars a head), but one cannot be cynical about her protean artistic gifts. And besides, what's so funny about peace, love, and understanding?

This album is truly the stuff of legends!

At the time this was released, Streisand had not performed live for many years, yet this performance was a tour-de-force showcasing her talents..........the first live performance in years and not one bum note!!

What makes this album is the fact that she has been motivated by causes close to her heart to give this fund raising concert. She didn't need to do it (certianly not financially!) and so it comes from the heart.

This is a absolutely astounding performance by anybody's standards.

So its Streisand and its live. That should mean its one of the greatest CDs to have in your collection. Unfortunately, this proves not to be the case. Recorded in her back yard, Barbra opts for a few synthesizers and a couple of electronic drums to provide inadequate back-up for her othewrwise brilliant songs. 'Over The Rainvow', 'Papa Can You Hear Me', 'Somewhere' and 'Send In The Clowns' are all here - to name just a few. Its just such a shame it wasnt recorded with a huge orchestra in a big arena - the location is dull, the orchestrations are dull and the audience are not as appreciative as one would expect. They are great songs and they are sung superbly. By all means purchase it - but dont expect that usual tingly sensation you would experience at a real live Babra concert.
