It seems quite ironic that 5 years on from her stunning debut 'She's so unusual' in which Cyndi Lauper made one of the most original, singular pop albums of the 80's, she would go on to make something as bland and mainstream as 'A Night to Remember'. The bulk of this album is written by commercial songwriting giants Steinberg & Kelly and Diane Warren and as a result of this most of the songs on the album have a real lack of personality and inspiration that even Lauper's unique vocals can't overcome. Dire songs like 'Heading west' are notable purely for being extremely boring.

The only great song on the album is 'I Drove All night' which is classic Cyndi Lauper and my favourite rendition of the song. 'Primitive', 'Like a Cat' and 'Insecurious' are decent pop tracks that would have made good filler on a better album, but as it is end up being the highlights on a disappointing cd. The rest of the album is more or less unlistenable.

Cyndi Lauper was no chicken and one of the greatest and unique voices to come out of the 1980s when she stormed her way on to 'Top Of the Pops' with 'Girls Just Want To Have Fun'! A voice with 'attitude', and looks 'visually' great as well as sounding it too!

This is a great album and contains the massive chart hit: 'I Drove All Night'. Whilst not one for cover versions myself, here Cyndi makes it her own - some can do it, and others can't, and Cyndi Lauper is one of those rare singers who do it well! You can always rely on at least one 'zany' track on any of Cyndi's albums, and here it's 'Like A Cat' with the 'direct' and 'fiery' lyrics; 'when you threw me out the window - I landed on my feet' - and one can well believe Cyndi Lauper being capable of doing just that!! But the greatest song on this album undoubtedly has to be: 'My First Night Without You' - her rendition of this as she belts out the chorus makes you really feel how desperate it must feel, and what it must be like to be left alone for the very first time after spending each and every night with someone else!

This is a real 'must' for Cyndi fans - the girl is great!!
