Webern's music is among the most interesting I've heard. It's right on the cusp between "classical" and "modern", avoiding the stochastic excesses of the latter and breaking free of the occasionally hackneyed mould of the former.

His works are completely incomprehensible but that's what makes them all the more interesting. And of course the fact that the package is the complete set of his works makes it a highly attractive proposition. We want more of these "complete works" boxes.

The book that accompanies the set is comprehensive and informative, and contains the full lyrics for all the songs, in three languages. Recommended.

As far as "definitive" recordings go, this one certainly qualifies simply by virtue of offering some of the most committed performances of the music of this great master. Apart from the great benefits of having of all Webern's oeuvre in one set without duplications, at a remarkably affordable price, these are some of the best Webern performances you're likely to catch on disc (and that's not just my opinion!).

If you seriously want to discover Webern's music, go for this one. It will certainly pay off. Quality, value, and great musicianship in one neat package!

Having for a long time been a fan of avant garde rock bands like Henry Cow I found this set a complete revelation, because here is where their non jazz influence clearly comes from. This is not easy to listen to on a first hearing but those used to the the avant garde will soon find much to admire in the texture and emotion that is displayed in even very short pieces. This disc is far more interesting than I had dared to expect and can really recommend it to people who like groups like Henry Cow and want to find out more about where that sound comes from.
