Tobias was Estonian and his dates were 1873-1918 a period when other late romantic composers like Magnard, Ropartz and even Elgar were also going for broke. The title translates as 'Jonah's Mission'. It was finished in 1909.
If you can take the most powerful choral works you have ever heard and still come back for more you may like this but I warn you this is the most extreme and demanding of them all. It's more demanding than all the great Requiems: only Beethoven's Masses come close. The sound world is somewhere between Gotterdamerung Act ll, Berlioz' Requiem and Te Deum,and Elgar's Gerontius with plenty of choral Beethoven in evidence, and in one place, the big climax for chorus, orchestra and organ in section 8, so like the Mahler of the 8th Symphony that I suspect that Tobias had heard it or read the score. But the overwhelming impression it leaves is of an ambitious and noble lyricism in the Wagnerian manner,
The text must be followed with closely to guarantee full attention but it also adds to the intensity of the experience because the lines are chosen freely from the most intensely poetic biblical passages possible - but it has more in common with 'Thus Spake Zarathustra' (Nietsche's book) and 'Brand' (Ibsen's play) than Bach's Passions or 'Elijah'.
