Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

His third album, and arguably his finest, Late for the Sky continues Browne's sincere self-analysis into positively grim territory. The title track concerns the lingering effects of a dead relationship and was featured in Martin Scorcese's film Taxi Driver. While "For a Dancer" confronts death head-on, "Farther On" explains the difficulties faced by so-called dorks who live life through books, films or music; and "Before the Deluge" forecasts environmental gloom and doom. Guitarist David Lindley adds terrific counterpoint to Browne's musing, supporting the tracks with tasteful slide and fiddle work. --Rob O'Connor

CD Description

Jackson Browne's early career was inextricably linked to the singer-songwriter movement of the 70s, and LATE FOR THE SKY has proven to be one of the era's strongest and most enduring releases. Browne's reflective songwriting style attaineda new level of maturity on songs such as "Fountain Of Sorrow" and "For A Dancer", the latter a strikingly literate meditation on death.
The high points on LATE FOR THE SKY are the title track and "Before the Deluge", two brooding songs of personal and social apocalypse that bookend the album andseem to reflect the disillusionment and weather-beaten moodof the counter-cultural generation in the early '70s. The balance between Browne's gentle, emotive voice and the tasteful arrangements perfectly matches the incisive quality of the songwriting, making LATE FOR THE SKY one of Browne's strongest, and most consistent albums.

5.0 out of 5 stars Golden Browne, 4 Dec 2000
By R. Turk (Kent, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Late For the Sky is now more than 25 years old, but to me it still sounds as fresh today as it did back in the 70s. If you have rarely listened to Jackson Browne or have always wondered what all the fuss was about then just listen to 'For A Dancer' , which was stangely missing from his recent 'Greatest Hits compilation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pure perfection, 21 Feb 2004
Having not heard all of Jackson Browne's albums, and certainly not every album in the world, I can't say with complete conviction that this is the best album in the world, or even Browne's best album, but it is amazing! The only thing even slightly wrong with it is that I think the title track should be the final track of the album, rather than the first. 'Late for the Sky' is one of the most spine-tinglingly beautiful songs ever written, and would be more effective as an album closer. But meh, who am i to mess with Jackson's genius?

Every song on this album is amazing, whether it's the more traditional Jackson-style stuff of beautiful, soaring melodies and life-contemplating lyrics (see 'Late for the Sky' or 'Fountain of Sorrow'), or funk rock-ness ('Walking Slow' or 'The Road and the Sky'), not a single song hits a wrong note.

So few people have never heard of Jackson Browne, and in my opinion, he is the most underrated artist, um, ever. The only thing I can say about this album is buy it now, and echo the thoughts of the other reviewers. This is Jackson at his very best.

5.0 out of 5 stars a smooth, soft, succulent, feelgood, peach of an album, 16 Feb 2003
this is one of those rare abums that sounded beautiful, graceful and down right amazing on the first listen. Browne's luxurious, pure voice perfectly compliments the spine tingling melodies. This album will hit your heart like a sledgehammer and you'll come out the other end awe inspired and gobsmacked by 'late for the skys' sheer mastery in creating a gorgeous, stirring musical landscape.
