Walter's recordings of Mahler's 9th Symphony with the Vienna Philharmonic and Columbia Symphony Orchestras are unquestionably of great historical importance. While there is no shortage of commercial recordings of the former (Vienna) live performance (available on the EMI, Dutton and Naxos labels, for example), it has proved difficult in recent years to obtain the latter studio version. This is primarily because stock of the 2-CD Bruno Walter Edition issue (Sony SM2K 64452) has become all but exhausted, with any remaining solitary copies (secondhand or new) being offered for sale at exaggerated prices. For many music lovers, a (cheaper!) option has been the purchase of boxed sets (compilations) of Walter's Sony recordings of Bruckner's 4th, 7th and 9th Symphonies, together with Mahler's 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th and 9th, but why should it have been necessary to purchase duplicate copies of the other symphonies just to obtain a recording of Mahler's 9th? For the reasons indicated above, I very much welcome the availability of this download; for myself, the transfer process proved to be simple and free of hiccups, while the downloaded sound quality is simply excellent. I commend Amazon for having made more widely available an important musical document, which occupies a central position in the recorded legacy of a very special conductor.
