Product Description

CD Description

POWER SPOT is the 1986 landmark recording by one of the pioneers of intelligent, synth-oriented jazz-rock. Jon Hassell is a master trumpeter whose unique style and sounds have influenced a generation of musicians from the Talking Heads to Deep Forest. His fusion of Western classical music with world influences is the cornerstone of the now-ubiquitous genre of world music. The title track is a brilliant polyphonic composition that chugs through J.A. Deane's textured electronic percussion as Hassell's trumpet moans and shimmers. This complex musical tapestry shows influences as diverse as Africa's hypnotic drumming, swirling Middle Eastern-flavoured solos, and the nascent electronic trappings of LaMonte Young. "The Elephant and the Orchid" is a gorgeous, extended meditation on these concepts and features exotic sounds and tape loops that, by default, would be called world music, but in actuality, are simply not of this world. POWER SPOT was produced by Brain Eno and Daniel Lanois, two musicians who excel in innovative recording techniques and capturing the singularstyles of exceptional artists. Jon Hassell is a perfect match for Eno and Lanois. They faithfully reproduce his musicalvoice while adding the fire that saves this recording from having any cold, robotic effects. Robust and satisfying, POWER SPOT remains a seminal recording in the electronic and world music genres.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dark austere soundscapes created by the Memphis trumpeter!, 7 Aug 2001
After hearing Hassell's collaboration with Brian Eno on "Possible Musics",I had to hear more and this album was the launchpad for me to acquire every album he had made up until then - and since! It opens up with the title track, deeply percussive and ponderous in rhythm, and continues this way into the next track until we enter the creepy sounding 'Solaire' which embellishes it's darkness of sound with subtle electronic touches - the best track on the album for me! The second half of the album moves into Eastern Asian territory musically with percussion and trumpet eerily dancing a duet aided by an impressive array of musicians such as Michael Brook,JA Deane,Richard Horowitz,Brian Eno,and Jean-Phillipe Rykiel.I still think "Power Spot" is his best album, but many of his other releases run it mighty close, and he has yet to release a duff album in my view!
