4.0 out of 5 stars Another neglected Donizetti opera, 8 Jan 2002
By A Customer
Gruberova has, it seems, been attempting with the Japanese Nightingale Classics series to record all the bel canto operas of Donizetti which are 'worth reviving', ie that have at least one famous aria.

Linda is a charming pastoral comedy telling the tale of a simple Swiss family trying to retain the freehold of their farm; Linda is being pursued by the wicked landlord, but is really in love with another; that other is of course someone in disguise, and....

The hit song comes early on in Act I, but the rest of the music is quite enjoyable. Linda's mad scene isn't on a par with Lucia, but Edita fuels it with some ceiling-scraping leaps and runs so that one is left feeling breathless (but at her technique rather than the score).

This recording was made live, but one cannot tell until the end of each act when the applause begins. Clear recording, enthusiastic singing, and the only digital recording of this opera.

Give it a go!
