4.0 out of 5 stars A mixed Christmas blessing., 12 Sep 2002

A mixed Christmas blessing. Bach's "Christmas Oratorio" is nowadays more likely to be heard and appreciated on record than in live performances. It was never intended for performance in one sitting. It comprises six cantatas, suitable for performing separately during the so-called twelve days of Christmas. The nearest I have come to hearing it performed was on one occasion when three of the six cantatas were done at one early December evening concert.

Veteran Hungarian conductor Geza Oberfrank leads and inspires his Hungarian forces here, highlighting the joyous and celebratory character of the music rather than ensuring an atmosphere of reverence and adoration. A large and generally alert choir is used. What robs the set of a fifth star is the poor recording quality that sometimes marred Naxos issues from the 1990s. The sound lacks richness. Most seriously affected are the soloists, all of whom - especially the bass - sound hoarse. A further consideration counts against this set: it occupies three CDs. Naxos's regular annotator, Keith Anderson, provides the music notes, texts are provided in German only, and the duration is 148 minutes.

2.0 out of 5 stars If money is the object..., 2 Dec 2003
By A Customer
I find this recording very boring indeed. The orchestra is too big and cumbersome, the choir sings uninspired and with very bad diction, precision and pronounciation and the soloists are dull to say the least. The sound of the recording is flat and a bit noisy in places. The solo instruments (for instance the trumpet in "Grosser Herr, o starker König) blends too much with the rest of the orchestra, so that you can't hear the beautiful counterpoint with the bass soloist, the same thing is present in the tenor aria "Frohe Hirten eilt, ach eilet". The counterpoint in general is very hard to hear in this recording (Jauchzet, frolokket is more like a soup of sound than a sequence of clear themes and counterpoint). If you don't want to spend a lot of money on the christmas oratorio, it may be worthwhile to go for this one, but if you need a recording for anything more than just background music for doing the dishes in december, you should go for Gardiner's recording, Jacob's on Harmonia Mundi (if you are a period performance buff and find Gardiner a bit too heavy) or Richter's with Wunderlich, Janowitz and Crass if you enjoy the full (romantic!?) sound of the Münchener Bach Orchester and Chor. If lack of money is the issue, I guess this will do, but you can also find Harry Christophers' recording with The Sixteen at bargain price (Out on the Collins label), which I would find far superior to this one, even though it's not all the way up there with Gardiner et al
