The title is partly intended in jest, none of these ten songs were actually singles. However, Norwegian guitarist TerjeRypdal with his young band the Chasers, is at his most hook-filled rocking here. Recorded in 1988 and released the following year, this is the most successful of his several albums with the tight little combo (other titles were the two previous releases, CHASER and BLUE). Rypdal's playing, whiling recalling Jimi Hendrix and Jeff Beck, also is rich with the funky and jagged riffing associated with Miles Davis's seventies recordings. The rhythm section of Audun Kleive and Bjorn Kjellemer are powerful and relentless (listen to "Sprott" and be convinced). The keyboard textures provided by Allan Dangerfield add depth and atmosphere, and he also wrote two of the albums pieces, including the hallucenogenic "Strange Behaviour". Rypdal has presented his music in numerous different directions over the years. THE SINGLES COLLECTION is an essential glimpse of him at his most supercharged and electric.
