5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Example of Prayerful Modern Chant Derived from Gregorian Chant, 23 Nov 2008
This recording has been one of my favourites since it was first issued. It runs through the complete Liturgy of the Hours as celebrated at Worth Abbey, in Sussex, England, on the Feasts of St Benedict. The monks sing with great simplicity and devotion and listening to the recording I feel something of the peace that I experience whenever I visit Worth Abbey and other Monastic churches.

I like the quiet organ accompaniment that often plays behind some chanting, but for a change the monks also use a zither, which could hark back in ones imagination to the days when King David may have accompanied his psalming to a harp. Both methods help the singers to keep in tune, but as very quietly played they have a calming effect all of their own.

As well as being wonderfully calming for chilling out, the words are well worth reflecting on, as time allows, to gain the full benefit from them. Sadly the cover notes only summarise them, but most of them can be found in the Bible and elsewhere. The translation of The Psalms from the very good Grail Version, which is the official version used by the Roman Catholic Church in many English speaking countries, (Copies of this are also available). For anyone wishing to pray the Liturgy of the Hours, handy versions being A Shorter Morning and Evening Prayer: The Psalter of the Liturgy of the Hours, or the US equivalent Shorter Christian Prayer, as I enjoy doing, this recording would give a wonderful opportunity to do this, although for more daily variation the, also excellent, CD Calming the Storm The Monks of Glenstal Abbey Audio Book of Prayer is worth getting together with their The Glenstal Book of Prayer: A Benedictine Prayer Book. I can incidentally recommend both of these recordings for people with sight problems who want to meditate and pray, but may not have access to the appropriate books.

I love Gregorian Chant and wish that more effort were made in using it with English as some Anglican's do. (For Roman Catholics there is a wonderful reservoir of this within Traditional Anglican sources). At the same time the modern chant derived from Gregorian Chant is wonderful as well and this recording is a good example.

For those who enjoyed watching the BBC TV series, "The Monastery" or read the book by the Abbot of Worth, Dom Christopher Jamison, "Finding Sanctuary: Monastic steps for Everyday Life: Monastic Steps for Everyday Life" this recording will add to those experiences.

I hope that the Community of Worth Abbey will give serious consideration towards making many more recordings of their liturgies as time goes on. In doing so they will be making a very valuable contribution to sharing the riches of their worship with a wider public. Until then this recording alone, will minister to souls in a wonderful way. I am sure that those who buy it, whether they are practising Christians or not will gain great peace from listening to it.
