5.0 out of 5 stars The best Nielsen's Fifth, ever, 20 Mar 2004
By Steerforth (Sussex) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Over half a century later, Jensen's interpretation of the Fifth Symphony still has the power to shock with its raw, primordial intensity. Jensen knew this symphony inside-out and delivers a near-perfect account of this extraordinary music (I have never heard such a wonderfully uninhibited sidedrum cadenza).

Naturally the sound quality isn't fantastic, but the sheer force of this blazing performance transcends the technical limits of the recording.

I'd give this six stars if I could. It's that good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Authentic Nielsen, 19 Jan 2009
By J. Tyrrell (Birmingham UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Short of having a recording of Carl Nielsen himself conducting his own music this must be the closest you can get. Thomas Jensen, along with Launy Grondahl and Erik Tuxen, knew Nielsen, possibly playing under his baton and so had a good idea of the composer's intentions. It was at the Edinburgh Festival of 1950 that brought Carl Nielsen to the notice of British audiences when the Fifth Symphony was performed by the Danish State Radio Orchestra conducted by Tuxen. He can be heard in this symphony on another Decca recording in a transfer from 78 rpm recordings on Dutton CDK 1207. This was a studio performance in Copenhagen. A complete set of the 6 symphonies from Danacord 351-3 shared between the 3 conductors again has Tuxen directing the Fifth, this time in a live recording in Paris. To me it was this recording under Jensen which I found the most revealing. The expectancy of the opening is caught and the performance is compelling as a whole. The same goes for Jensen in the other symphonies. It's possible to find performances of all the symphonies under Jensen from various sources, The Second is copies with Grondahl's justly famous In extinguishable on HMV again transferred by Dutton CDCLP 4001. But wait until you hear Jensen's account included in the Danacord set! Hang on to your seats, although I think members of the DSRO had difficulty keeping up, especially in the excitement of the last movement. Not an example of perfect ensemble, or for the squeamish but as with the Fifth here the spirit of Nielsen shines through.Thomas Jensen Conducts Nielsen, Vol.1

5.0 out of 5 stars Authentic Nielsen performances in vintage Decca sound, 8 Sep 2008
By Mike "dmh220551" (Hampshire, UK) - See all my reviews
The earlier reviewer is quite right. I first acquired these two symphonic performances on a budget Decca LP reissue many years ago. When I got hold of the Dutton reissue on CD, I was amazed by how well the recordings had come up. They were from the days of Decca's pioneering "full frequency range recording" mono technique and the First comes over extremely powerfully - maybe the colours are primary and lack some of the tonal finesse of a really good modern stereo recording, but for something over 50 years old it's nothing short of amazing!

The performance of the First Symphony strikes me as one of the very best, if not the best, that I've ever heard. It has tremendous forward drive without seeming in any way hard-driven. The Fifth is probably the greatest of Nielsen's symphonies (though some might argue for the 6th) and this performance is indeed excellent. The only one to beat it, in my view, was a live performance at The Proms given by the Gothenburg orchestra under Neeme Jarvi (unfortunately Jarvi's recorded performance on BIS doesn't come close to it in grip or atmosphere).
