5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it!, 27 Nov 2000
By A Customer
These concertos are works of sheer genius. And they are performed expertly by Mischa Maisky, with real emotion. I can't stop listening to it. The Gramophone Guide rated this recording 3Gs, which is the best possible rating for a recording, and it's worth it. If you like Shostakovich, this is an essential addition to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars outstanding in every way, 14 Mar 2007
By Gavin T. Smith (Somerset) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I think that the first cello concerto must be one of the greatest of the 20th century, and to do it justice a performer has to be a paganini of the instrument; fortunately Maisky has that ability. The deep, singing tone of the cello can often seem melancholy; Shostakovich makes it tragic, and the result is a heart felt threnody which, in the middle two movements, achieves an extraordinary intimacy. Those familiar with Shostakovich's symphonies will know how he often chooses to include passages that are effectively chamber music, with the emotional intensity that a few instruments in dialogue with one another can achieve; he does that here, to deeply moving effect. But the two outer movements are equally marvellous in their vigour, mordancy and attack. Much praise must go to Tilson Thomas, but it is ultimately Maisky's talent and Shostakovich's genius that make this an unmissable experience. Don't pass it by!
