5.0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece!, 25 Mar 2004
By G. R. Voisey "wellaar" (Brixham UK) - See all my reviews

To say that Previn's early LSO pergormance of the fifth is boring reminds me of an occasion when Lenny Bernstein stopped a rehearsal of "The Rite of spring" when he saw a musician yawn. It is just not possible. Previn recorded it twice. This the earlier version is truly illuminating. I have versions by the composer's son Maxim, Mravinsky,Barshai,Stokowski, Janssons and the later ( not so good) Previn version. I always return to this version for it's unfailing honesty, excellent performance and good 1960's RCA sound. Strongly recommended as a performance of the greatest symphony (sorry Elgar) of the 20th Century. On a par with Previn's early LSO recordings of Rachmaninov 2 and Walton 1

5.0 out of 5 stars BBC First choice, 15 Jul 2006

For the record, although this is an old recording, it is a BBC first choice for the Shostakovich library for its music and recording

1.0 out of 5 stars Too slow, 6 Dec 2003
Shostakovich's symphonies tend to be very linear. Lose hold of the line and they're gone. This is unbearably slow in the first movement and any sense of forward momentum is lost, almost before it's established. I heard Shostakovich's son, Maxim, conduct this symphony in Prague some years ago and he also was very slow in the first movement, so it's an accepted practice, but try Mravinski on Erato, for a far better, tauter experience, unbeatable.
