5.0 out of 5 stars Enormous Fun!, 11 May 2005
I really loved this work. I'm not familiar enough with the various sagas on which each movement is based (yet- I'm working my way through such Norse literature as I can find), but the power of the music is unmissable. I could grab my sword, leap on a longboat and pillage Lindisfarne right now!

Silliness aside, the music is as stirring and compelling as you'd expect from its title, and comes highly recommended. Horned helmets off to Bis for releasing so much of Leifs' work; I've yet to find a poor release!

4.0 out of 5 stars Pugnacious Music From Iceland's Jon Leifs, 17 Mar 2009

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
Only four stars, because I don't think Saga Symphony is ideal for a first stab at Leifs' cacophonous oeuvre. Newcomers should try Osmo Vanska's other disc, the one with Geysir on it; or the one with Hekla and the Requiem, conducted by En Shao.

Saga Symphony is most uncompromising, starting as it does with Skarp Hedinn, the first of five character portraits, whose music is especially violent. A relentless series of body blows. Leifs' unique gift for lyricism, for identifying just the right kind of sonority to suggest the uncanny or the humorous, can then be heard in the succeeding portraits: Gudrun Osvirsdottir (adagio), and Glamr & Grettir (intermezzo).

As always, the Iceland Symphony and Bis collaborate to produce superb, dynamic, crystal clear sound. Confirmed Leifs fans won't hesitate, but for everyone else, beware choosing this because it is called Symphony. All Leifs' trademarks ae here - the massed percussion artillery, the Icelandic lurs, the vast pregnant stillness before battle is joined - but this is not a symphony in the traditional sense. Leifs' shorter and/or vocal pieces are altogether easier to assimilate.
