Kempff has special insights in this repertoire. His minimalist approach to ornamentation, noticeable from the aria onwards, and occasionally liberal use of the sustaining pedal, may not be to all tastes. However, the clarity of line is never obscured - indeed, his profound knowledge of the contrapuntal tradition is evident throughout.

Characteristically of this artist, tempi are generally fairly relaxed in faster movements, while the slower variations are kept moving. Justice is done both to the spiritual dimension and to the wit of the score. Few performers today find such a warmth of expression in the voices of Bach's counterpoint. With consistently beautiful piano tone, this is a record to bring balm to ears bruised and bewildered by Glenn Gould's brutal accents and extremes of speed. Recorded sound is warm and clear.

Nevertheless, Kempff's later DG record of 18 preludes and fugues from Book I of the "48" is an even finer example of his art - one of the great Bach piano records by any standards - so admirers of this artist unfamiliar with his Bach and wishing to sample it may prefer to start with that CD.

Wilhelm Kempff delivers a thorough performance of the Goldberg variations. Less exciting and less passionate or fierce than some, but very delicate, thoughtfull and towards the end the beautifully clear. Not a major breakthrough in interpretation or delivery, but solid performance by a true master nevertheless.

Well how sad. What a fine bit of playing but I didn't gel with it at all. Especially the early variations which probably formed my view before I'd heard the best bits. I am no musicologist, the dust jacket of this CD claims that this performance is authentic, a scholar's view of how Bach should be played. Flat passionless and almost devoid of ornament would seem to be what this means. I wasn't expecting anything florid but Bach without passion comes across as an exercise in musical typewriting. The opening track especially came across as rather trite and even Bach's wonderful harmonies somehow were concealed by the style. Sorry Wilhelm. I suppose I was spoiled because I used to own the Gould interpretation of the Goldberg variations. This drove me round the twist in the end and I had to give it to my mother who can't hear Glenn Gould humming tunelessly in the background so continues to enjoy it. The playing on this latter recording is just fantastic though. Can anyone suggest a recording with Gould's passion but without the tuneless humming?! Kempff has missed the mark for me I fear. Having said all that , the later variations played by Kempff were much more appealing, being more ornate and therefore inevitably a higher Bach to Kempff ratio. This recording may appeal to the proper musical scholars amongst you though. It takes all sorts to make a musical world.
