I have very little knowledge of classical music but I do have a fascination with the bizarre, sparked by a book about the life of the castrati. I tracked down this CD. To create the voice of a castrato the voices of a male and female singers were cleverly blended (ah, that digital jiggery-pokery...). Do see the film if you haven't already, I found it lovely, although I have no idea why the film was a fictitious account, Farinelli's real life was fascinating enough to be a movie anyway. The music here is utterly beautiful, we even had one track as our wedding music. A good CD for anyone who doesn't know anything about classical music (like me!) and perhaps also for someone who does!

Those who've seen the movie will note that the English subtitles suddenly stopped when Farinelli sung. Odd. Odder still that both this disc and another Astree disc "Castrats" fail to include texts. At full price one has to ask why?

There is also series of four "castrato" releases featuring the male soprano Christofellis and period instrument ensembles on EMI:

"L'Age d'Or des Castrats". First track is "Che giova fuggire" from Bononconi's Griselda (EMI 55259) NO TEXTS

"Farinelli et son temps - Quel usignuolo". Frist track is 'Misero Pargoletto' from Duni's Demofoonte. (EMI 55250) UNKNOWN IF TEXTS OR NOT

"Superbo di me stesso Airs de virtuosit� du XVIIIe si�cle". First track by Lampugnani "Superbo di me stesso" as disc title. (EMI 55194) INCLUDES TEXTS

"Les castrats au temps de Mozart". First track is "Cara La Dolce Fiamma" from J.C.Bach's Adriano (EMI 56134) INCLUDES TEXTS
