Product Description

CD Description

Consisting mostly of singles and b-sides, this compilation contains 14 good-to-great Smiths tracks. Starting with the early paean to the terminally dandified, "This Charming Man",it covers the entire span of the Smiths' career.
BEST, VOLUME I contains some wonderful moments, such as the whine of "What Difference Does it Make", the knowing satire of "Girlfriend in a Coma", and the beautiful teenage angst of the acoustic "Half a Person". Also featured is what might possibly be the Smiths' finest moment, the post-modern Bo Diddley guitar-driven shuffle of "How Soon is Now". The subversive "Panic" with its pertinent "hang the DJ, hang the DJ, hang theDJ" chorus is also a welcome inclusion. This is a valuable compilation, recommended to those interested in sampling some of the delights of one of the '80s most influential British bands.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why??, 23 Nov 2004
By A Customer
This album is superb only for the fact that it is the Smiths. If any other band brought out 4 albums that are virtually the same i wouldv'e cringed, but as it's Moz and Co, i'll let the right one slip. They brought out The Very Best Of, The Best Of Part One, The Best Of Part Two And The Singles album which are all basically the same. The Best Of Parts 1 & 2 are better left to the hardcore Smiths fans like myself. A newcomer is better buying The Very Best Of if they want a record industry cash in of the smiths. The Highlights of this album are evident by readin the track listing. There is the painfully beautiful "please please please let me get what i want", which as someone said before is by far Morrisseys best vocal on the album. "This Charming Man" is another highlight providing a comfortable jolly sort of feel to the album. The best song is by far "Some Girls Are Bigger Than others". As i said before this album is not for the new Smiths fan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality Throughout, 12 Nov 2000
By A Customer
This is a simply amazing compilation album, and an excellent introduction to the work of probably Britain's greatest ever band.
Fourteen songs, and not one of them bad. Opening with the lively "This Charming Man" and uplifting "William, It Was Really Nothing", progressing to the light-hearted "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" and "Girlfriend In A Coma", and with such tracks as "Hand In Glove", "Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others", "Sheila Take A Bow" and "Panic", this collection should go some way towards dispelling the popular myth of the Smiths as a depressing band.
The more melancholic listener will doubtless enjoy the classic "How Soon Is Now?", the wonderful and witty "Half A Person" and the touching "Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want" (featuring perhaps Morrissey's best vocal performance of this CD).
With Marr's brilliant tunesmanship and Moz's lyrical wit evident throughout, picking a few stand-out tracks is virtually impossible. The better known songs - "This Charming Man" and "How Soon Is Now?", for instance - may draw newcomers to the compilation, but they will quickly find new favourites among the less famous, but equally superb, album tracks.
Don't deprive your music collection of such wonderful company.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have for any Smith's fan, 15 Nov 1999
By A Customer
I love this cd - if you liked the Smith's in the 80's this album is obviously for you. It has the ever popular "How Soon is Now" as well as a number of songs that evoke memories of those days. The funny thing about some of these songs is that by the title, you may not realize that you already know the songs quite well. But the cd is worth a listen even if it sounds unfamiliar to you, because you will find yourself pleasantly surprised. The only album that gives this one a run for it's money is "The Smiths...The Best II".
