With Litany, Estonian composer Arvo Pärt created one of his most stirring works: a nearly 23-minute long composition for orchestra and vocal ensemble based upon the 24 prayers of St. John Chrysostom (one for each hour of the day). Commissioned for the 25th Oregon Bach Festival, the composition is both memorable and timeless. It finds influences in everything from chant to the repetition of modern minimalism. Play it loudly and the striking vocals of the Hilliard Ensemble simply soar against the strings of Tallinn Chamber Orchestra. The orchestral Trisagion harkens towards Litany's mood swings and impact, but--sans voice--lacks the mysticism. This is one of Pärt's best, and as sacred as modern compositions come. --Jason Verlinde

I have become increasingly interested in Parts work (particularly his choral works) for a while now and it just gets better the more i listen to it (which is a lot!). Litany, is an immensly powerful piece, with a whole spectrum of sound from the mixture of incredible voices>which is totally unique. His use of Brass and percussion is arrestingly simple but wholly original and unlike anything i have ever heard.
Like the previous comment, words do not really express how amazing this composer's work is and how incredible this piece of music is. I agree too that you need to listen to it in the dark!

Avro Part has something that goes beyond music, an abilty to touch your soul. His music has a dimension that goes beyond conventional music. Litany is haunting, magical, moving. It's beyond description. It touches the parts others can't reach. Turn down the lights and just experience it.
