5.0 out of 5 stars Lion is King, 26 Jul 2007

This review is from: Afrijazzy (Audio CD)
Afrijazzy stands head and shoulders above virtually every other African recording because of the components of the montage it represents. Assembled musicians from the heart of Africa, mixed with collaborators and long time admirers of the Lion himself.
Late 80's production renders the full depth and fidelity to the craftsmanship of the musicians without over-indulgence, while Dibango's passion for contemporary instrumentation unleashes his unmatched ability to intoxicate with vivid intersections of rhythm and horn. There are no contrived homage's to the Cora playing tribesmen that satisfy afro-tourists wearing open toe-sandals. This is a full on vibe assault of Africa's parallel universe.
Dibango's writing is explorative and introspective with Masa Lemba, moody in Kango, accelerating frenetically into the majestically orchestrated horn section masterpiece of Doula Serenade, with Gombo Sauce the gently euphoric celebration. Aficionados will be relieved to note the obligatory version of Makossa (itself definitive of the evolving Dibango) is included for good measure, here stretched to outrageous lenghth in a 17-minute African homage to dance-electro.
There was a time when men of a certain age, would recline deep into the hide of a well worn sofa and immerse themselves in sound played at ballistic volumes, strong enough turn a baseball cap backwards by itself. Prolonged exposure eventually would lead to long ears and very short hair - or none at all. A maniacal grin would be permanently etched into the chin with a divorce equally likely. Afrijazzy is the perfect soundtrack to deomonstrate this effect and an audio delight.
You can't sing-a-long with this, You gotta roll with it.......
