Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Francis Ford Coppola took an inspired gamble in hiring the Polish composer to realise his Gothic stage production made for the cinema screen. Nothing about Kilar conforms to Hollywood. His classical works and earlier European films for the likes of Polanski and Zanussi, show a style based upon a repetitive form that insinuates itself upon the ear until it becomes unforgettable. "Vampire Hunters" is a superb example, being a cyclic string and brass motif that develops an exciting dynamic by revolving between keys. A pounding drum keeps time and rhythm for a flawlessly edited scene of destroying the vampire's lair. There is also the exquisite theme for Mina and Dracula, which in "Love Remembered" is presented on the composer's favoured instrument, flute. Again, it's through instrumental interchange across repetitions of the theme that the piece achieves its effect. A little sound design ("The Ring Of Fire") offers pause before the tender choral dénouement. Despite the tail-end pop song, this was a blockbuster debut without precedent. --Paul Tonks

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, powerful, and unforgettable, 7 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Possibly one of the best film soundtracks ever. It conjours up images of Eastern European splendour and dramatic mountain ranges, of fatal attraction and moving loyalty. If it sounds like I'm going over the top, then you obviously haven't seen the film. It conveys all the same emotions as the film; sorrow, love, and terror, but it is even more compelling. As I said, stunning, powerful, and totally unforgettable.

Without doubt one of the all-time great film scores, Kilar's majestic minimalist work is without parallel. Dark, haunting and utterly compelling, once heard this is never forgotten.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous - and poached, 23 Mar 2007
This is a fabulous soundtrack to a great movie. I've loved it for years. I'm writing this review primarily to encourage anyone who particularly likes this soundtrack to check out Bela Bartok's "The Wooden Prince". Hearing this for the first time recently, I realised I was listening to a vein of absolute gold, and one which was unconsciously or consciously mined by Wojciech Kilar in the composing of this soundtrack. Here in this early masterpiece of Bartok's, you'll hear the primary source for Kilar's soundtrack to Dracula. That said, the 'source' in reality goes back beyond Bartok - an avid 'collector' of folk music from Romania & Hungary... The previous reviewer's comments ring entirely true.

So many things we might reckon as startlingly original, at some point we may be shocked to stumble upon sources, parallels, inspirational material to. The beautiful 'Mina's theme' elements of Kilar's soundtrack I've not heard yet in The Wooden Prince, but maybe they're there... None of this detracts from the fact that I think it's a really great film score and a wonderful composition 'in its own right'. But don't forget Bartok... who, incidentally, was born in Transylvania....
