5.0 out of 5 stars Desperately in need of re-release, 29 Jan 2003
By Mr. GL Fox "Greg Fox" (Peterborough, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
For those of you who are not yet Gerald Barry devotees, something needs to be said about this incredible and unique style of writing music.
Gerald Barry is often described as a kind of neo-baroque Handelian in his approach to melodic line, which is characterised by long streams of same and similar durations to form the rhythmic surface. Frequently these lines are extremely angular in pitch. Never more-so than in this remarkable second opera. The male cast are required to sing basso profondo and counter-tenor in quick juxtaposition, and very quickly, often in stark almost anti-aliased counterpoint.
To exacerbate the difficulties for the performers, the metre and metric rhythm (as it were) of the piece is volatile and rapid. Tempi change like the wind, and switch suddenly from fast to very fast and back again.
For existing Barry fans, what's most important about this piece is that, unlike some of the chamber music, there is no striving for a kind of "systems music" feel, and indeed the texture-scheme is linked to the unfolding 'plot' rather than being the vehicle for large-scale explorations of how far one can twist a piece of dough. that's not to say that it's any less extreme than pieces like the circle with a line through it, or the straight line piece : quite the contrary - in many ways this represents the pinnacle to date of Gerald Barry's totalitarian attitude to line and its development. It's just that this is filtered through panes of scenic glass.
The only aggravating factor here is that the plot is impenetrably abstract! The main characters (well, ALL the characters) are the personifications of human tendencies. They flirt with each other as though within a single person, rather than the conventional interplay of autonomous beings. Naturally this is reflected in the harmonic and imitative language, full of accompagnato and nostagliato passages and swift reworkings of similarly different trajectories.
The real reason this simply HAS to be re-released as soon as humanly possible though is that when you listen to this piece, the overall effect, in spite of all the intellectual subtleties, in spite of all the wowing and impressiveness of the performance, is one of romance. You really genuinely do fall in love with this piece as with a lover who is also yourself.
So narcissists everywhere, (try to) buy this (try to) buy this (try to) buy this... until they're forced to re-release it!!!
