Product Description

CD Description

In retrospect, it's an ironic twist of fate that Japan was just blossoming into its most artistically fruitful period while on the verge of breaking up. When this 1982 concert wasrecorded at London's Hammersmith Odeon, Japan was just around the corner from disintegration. OIL ON CANVAS makes a hell of a swan song.
The band had come a long way from it's glam-rock beginnings, evolving into a subtle, complex unit that combined post-punk funk, electronics, Asian imagery and an unbridled experimental streak for some of the early-'80s most memorable recordings. Incredibly, this live album reveals that the complicated textures and fragile dynamics of Japan's studio work transferred easily to the stage. David Sylvian's velvety baritone, Mick Karn's jazzy fretless bass, andRichard Barbieri's exotic, atmospheric synthesizers make these tunes from the band's final phase as rewarding as they are inscrutable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime perfection, 20 Jun 2003
By B. O. Hansen (Oslo, Norway) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Live-albums are more often than not celebrated for their embelishing and sometimes even alternative versions of familiar songs. Oil on canvas proves to be the exception to the rule. Instead, Japan carefully explores the many layers of their music, not missing any detail nor note. Normally, if other bands were merely copying their own recordings in such fashion, it would provoke critisism. But Japan is blessed with an ability to leave you with the impression that this stunning album couldn't have been done any better. We are talking utter, almost inhuman, perfectionism here, with a band making it an art not to overlook any microdetail of their music. Arguably one of the most strong and original live-albums in history!

4.0 out of 5 stars an atmospheric overview of japan,s musial prowess, 10 Jun 2000
By A Customer
from an underrated band of the early eighties this album shows sylvian and co.in a rarely appreciated live light.from the spine tingling nightporter to the rousing sons of pioneers this collection of their work is an essential acquisition for the true fan and a suitable listen for the novice.sylvian is and was a musical individual and oil on canvas sums up his era as japan front man.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, excellent live recordings!, 13 Aug 2000
Japans only live CD and really a compilation of the Virgin albums Gentleman Take Polaroids and Tin Drum, both in themselves excellent to listen to, with Quiet Life thrown in. With a live performance to match there studio recordings, this album proves they had talent despite their unfortunate mediocre sucess. Definitly the best they have on a CD, and has got to be bought.

Japan were never really renowned as a live band, with their exotic sound more readily suited to the studio. Read more
