"And Do They Do" is a pleasant, but rather standard, example of Nyman's suites for band. Those who have heard the (somewhat better) "Water Dances" will know what to expect, and it's a decent pairing.

The real star here, though, is the "Zoo Caprices", a suite for solo violin that I would unhesitatingly give five stars in its own right. Balanescu is here in his element: as a long-standing Nyman performer he is pretty much essential to realising this work, which is highly contrapuntal and obviously indebted to the model of Bach's Sonatas & Partitas. Nyman's avowed aim in his string writing was to stretch the forces employed to emulate larger ensembles, and nowhere is this more evident than here, where solo violin has to replicate as much as possible of the highly textured band writing of Nyman's score to Peter Greenaway's movie, "A Zed and Two Noughts". Where some of the pieces reach the limits of performability - especially due to the double-stopping which imposes huge technical demands on the violinist - the characteristically shrill and tortured "Nymanic" style is a reminder that this is not an authentic Baroque piece but a wild, postmodern reinvention of Baroque style.

Ever since Nyman became convinced of his own "importance" his music has become dull in the extreme, but anyone wanting to investigate the sheer joie de vivre of his early career could hardly do better than this disc.
