5.0 out of 5 stars Classic soundtrack lovingly recreated., 9 Dec 2001
By A Customer
This CD is a must have for any film buff or music afficianado alike. The classic soundtrack is not the original recording from the film but is nevertheless an almost perfect reproduction of the original.Re-created by E.W.Korngold's son the whole C.D. is a polished memorial to his fathers undoubted talents. The tracks themselves are no stranger to anyone who has not imagined themselves as the child of their youth, fighting evil in the guise of Prince John or swinging through the trees to rescue a damsel in distress. This particular C.D. is made all the more interesting by the pull out booklet in the cover notes which gives a brief but interesting resume of how the music came to be written and the backround to the composers life and how he and his family fled nazi Germany to the safety of America, once again good versus evil but this time for real.

5.0 out of 5 stars There is so much life here. One of the essential pieces of 20thC. music., 4 Sep 2008
By Basiledes (North Wales) - See all my reviews
I have owned this on vinyl for years and was very surprised and pleased that it has transferred to CD well. Then I discovered that it was a very high profile early digital recording aiming for the best that digital could do.
If I had the job of saving a representative sample of music made by the people of this planet at the peak of our cultural development, and I was limited to 100 CDs I would have to find room for this score. There is so much of us here that is not to be found even in it's nearest major relatives in 'Serious Music', Mahler and Richard Strauss and Tchaikovsky and of course Wagner, that it would be seriously misrepresenting humans to leave it out. I could unpack and explain that at great length, but I think that if you hear this recording, and if you know M, S, T and W, you will know what I mean. Everything that is most genial and likeable about the human race seems to be here, if not our profound depths, occasional greatness and capacity for transcendance.

Even though the music is heard more or less in the same way as you hear it in the film, and not re-arranged in a suite, it still holds the attention. This is rare for film scores which on the soundtrack CDs are usually very 'stop/start' and hopelessly repetitive. Not here.
I would still like to hear a suite made out of it - it deserves it, - but this will do.

Just as well worth having in addition to this one is the more recent recording on Marco Polo in the 'DVD Audio' format which gives even higher quality sound than CD, if you have the right quality of equipment, and in 5.1 surround sound too. More importantly there are some interesting differences in the score and performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius Film Score, 4 Feb 2008
By D. Gallimore (Britain) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Much loved film given life by the finest dramatic score to come out of Hollywood's golden era. Essential listening for anyone interested in film or classical music. Perhaps even better than The Sea Hawk, and surpassing Max Steiner's work by some way.
