To follow in the steps of the superb recording taken from the soundtrack of the original film is a daunting task. The Original Broadway Cast with Alfred Drake and Maria Karnilova and a full Broadway orchestra did well but lacked Gallic charm. This London Cast Recording may lack the star names and large orchestra but comes so close to the original film in capturing the spirit of the piece, it would be sad for fans of the score to miss it.

The production features a chamber orchestra and the result is enchanting. The Entr'acte is so beautifully played, it becomes a highlight and a stand-alone piece in its own right. The performers are well inside their characters. The readings of the cast (Beryl Reid, Jean-Pierre Aumont, Sian Phillips, Geoffrey Burridge and Amanda Waring) are different from those you'll remember from the film but do stand comparison with the original. Most important of all, the performance is charming.
