3.0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth a listen, 19 Dec 2008
By J. Severidt "jornfin" (Rovaniemi, Finland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
(Allow me to recycle part of my review of the excellent interpretation of Bach's six suites for unaccompanied cello by Yo-Yo Ma.)

No musician of stature would claim to have produced "the definitive rendering" of anything. They would know that the truly great works of musical art have a complexity that can never be fathomed and brought to light in its entirety by one man or orchestra at any one time. So why, then, do reviewers spend (waste) so much time arguing whose interpretation "sets the standard", "is perfect" or "superior to all others"?
Well, probably because that's what they get paid for. They'd make themselves dispensable if they allowed for diverging opinions, for subjectivity.

However, as Joachim Fernau argues in the chapter on Bach in his book "Die Genies der Deutschen", Bach wrote music as a means of communication between him and the god he believed in. A follower of Martin Luther, he did not want to rely on the church as a go-between, but felt that each man had to find his own channels of communication. This makes his works particularly personal; it also means that each interpreter is asked, even demanded, to personalize his interpretation of them.

This version of the somewhat mysterious "Kunst der Fuge" is interesting. As another reviewer pointed out, it "brings avant-garde sensibility" to the work. That is a good thing and everyone interested in Bach's work should give this a try, for perspective's sake. Unfortunately, this performance just doesn't work for me. I keep losing first focus, then interest. That is a rare thing to happen with any work of Bach's.

As I said, don't let this keep you from listening to this, at least once. You might just as well love it; and it will certainly add to your picture of Bach's work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathless, Haunting from Kurtag favourites, 14 Jan 2008

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Andras Keller has worked heavily wih Gyorgy Kurtag (see Kafka-Fragments).

On this CD his eponymous quartet bring something of this avant-garde sensibility (much like Kremer in the Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin) that renders this music closer to its Pythagorean (see Dentler) inspiration.

Excellent.
