Amazon.co.uk Review

The Cream of Eric Clapton still manages to raise its head as Slowhand's definitive greatest-hits package, despite umpteen albums and an armful of Grammys since its release in 1987. Opening with one of the most famous rock intros ever, "Layla" has been the envy of bedroom guitarists for the last three decades. Next up is a choice selection of Cream's finest with hits such as "Sunshine of Your Love" and "White Room" plus the breakneck blues of "Crossroads" as a reminder of what Clapton did before his period of substandard covers, such as Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff" or JJ Cale's "Cocaine". The latter half of the album is not up to par with the incredible start but does redeem itself with the beautiful ode to love, "Wonderful Tonight" and the chicken-picking "Lay Down Sally", though with its vague chronological order, The Cream of Eric Clapton does slowly regress into the tired ground of a rock dinosaur.--Georgina Collins

Description

If you only have the funds or shelf space to own one Eric Clapton album, THE CREAM OF ERIC CLAPTON is the one to get. Featuring 19 songs that span from Cream's 1966 hit "I Feel Free" to Clapton's 1981 single, "I Can't Stand It", this amplecollection of career highlights from the legendary English guitarist is essential classic rock. The album opens with five tracks by Cream, the psychedelic-blues power trio that Clapton led in the sixties. The heavy riff-rocker "Sunshine ofYour Love" and "Badge", his 1968 collaboration with Beatle George Harrison, feature some of his best playing ever.
Clapton's post-Cream bands, Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominos (his 1970 supergroup with Duane Allman) are also represented with such remarkable blues-rock performances as "Presence of the Lord", Bell Bottom Blues" and the timeless rock classic, "Layla". The remainder of the album is devoted to Clapton's seventies solo hits like "After Midnight", I Shot The Sheriff", "Cocaine" and "Wonderful Tonight". Though this collection does not include latter-day Clapton hits like "Tears in Heaven", it's safe to say that the spectacular performances on this album are truly THE CREAM OF ERIC CLAPTON.

4.0 out of 5 stars Clapton is a legend, 26 Jun 2003
The first three quarters of this album display Clapton's incredible ability in groups such as the cream and derek and the dominos, but tracks such as swing low sweet chariot lack the same talent.the variety in this album is excellent but most people like a certain era of clapton, for raw blues buy from the cradle,or r+b buy john mayall's bluesbreakers featuring clapton, for rock pop buy august or behind the sun,for excellent psychedelic rock/blues buy disraeli gears by the cream.the best albums in my opinion are, disraeli gears, layla+other assorted love songs,ec was here.these cover the majority of claptons quality music. but this album could be a good startin point as it has such variety, and from this album u can find ur favourite clapton era.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good taster, 22 Jan 2003

Eric Clapton was given the nickname 'god' in the sixties when he was the original guitar hero. This album of 'hits' covers the early and middle years of Erics great career. This is a good place to start if you are new to Eric's music, but be warned you may then need to buy the original albums from which tese tracks were taken. Another suggestion would be to buy 'Crossroads' a more comprehensive collection of Eric's guitar playing and singing.

4.0 out of 5 stars two albums into one, 12 Nov 2000
"The Cream of Eric Clapton" combines neatly "Strange Brew: The Best Of Cream" and "Timepieces: The Best of Eric Clapton", featuring 6 of the 12 songs on the former album and 8 of the 11 from the latter. in this, it omits the powerful "SWLABR" and the catchy "Born Under A Bad Sign" both by Cream and the fast and very enjoyable "After Midnight" and "Willie and the Hand Jive", a more mellow effort, from Timepieces, omissions which are frankly disappointing. having said that, the songs that are included are, to a man, excellent examples of clapton's undisputed genius. Personally i would recommend buying both albums but this one encapsulates the essence of both into just one cd. which is nice.

Very good compilation of Clapton's early classics. One of the best compilations there is. Some real gems such as the eight listed below.

1.0 out of 5 stars What?
Oh, come off it. The guy's guitar sound is nauseating, his solos are slow and boring, and the songs are poor. He just plays a louder, flashier version of Albert King. Read more
