2.0 out of 5 stars Curiosity value only, 5 April 2002
By A Customer
Glenn Gould was, in the eyes of many, one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. His perceived stature as a musician, on the basis of his recordings of Bach only, is certainly deserved. However, Gould is well known for despising the music of Mozart. As a result he concedes that the earliest piano sonatas perhaps aren't so bad, as they have certain baroque elements and tend towards a more contrapuntally conceived style of writing, but he has little time for the greater, late works.

The unfortunate thing about this set is not only that here is a performer playing music he openly disliked. His contemptuous attitude is to be heard in every bar and in the way he deliberately ignores and thwarts the composer's intentions, adopting crazy speeds and articulations, for instance, that have nothing to do with what the composer wrote.

Gould was a genius, but his way with Mozart's sonatas cannot be taken seriously, even if it is the work of a genius at his most eccentric. If you want to hear Gould, listen to his Bach, his Schoenberg, his Strauss even (he had an extraordinarily versatile repertoire). If it's an account of the Mozart sonatas you are after, you will want one where there is some resemblance between score and performance.

5.0 out of 5 stars what a wit!, 15 April 2002
By A Customer
It is clear to the casual listener that these readings of mozart's piano sonatas are exotic. However, it is unfair to judge them on the basis of Gould's inflamitary "published opinion" of Mozart, he didn't have to record them, after all....
This is a wry account of some very witty music, and I recommend them as strongly as Uchida's more sedate and faithful versions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tongue-in-cheek Mozart, 25 Nov 2008
If you worship Mozart as a god, avoid these recordings. You are bound to throw the CDs out of window! Glenn Gould has no respect whatsoever for composer's markings or tempi. Most of the sonatas sound as if the pianist is testing the limit of how fast or how slow he can play it. Fast ones sound as if played by prepared piano! Slow ones are painfully slow. So you better get Barenboim's fine EMI recording instead (Mozart - Complete Piano Sonatas and Variations).

For Gould fans, the every recording is a revelation. It is guaranteed that you will have delightful time listening to each piece played with such delicacy, interesting left-hand effects and pure fun-making. I'm not sure what Mozart would make of it.

I enjoy Gould's interpretations of Bach and some of his Beethoven Concerti (notably the 3rd with Bernstein), but his readings of Mozart leaves me in two minds. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars At last Mozart I can enjoy!!
If you dismiss Glenn Gould's interpretation of Mozart's music simply because he does not follow the rules, you will miss out something truly amazing in these recordings. Read more
