5.0 out of 5 stars Sadly-missed songsmith par excellence, 16 Mar 2005
Jim Croce was an amazing talent whose brief career blazed alive in 1973 (the year of his death) with two US Number Ones.

Colin Escott's liner notes make the claim that, had he lived, he might have become the greatest of the singer-songwriters. A bold claim, with Messrs Dylan and Young (inter alia) providing stiff competition, but no doubt about it, he could write and sing some beautiful tunes.

This is an excellent value collection - 50 tracks, the only notable absentee being 'It Doesn't Have To Be That Way', his only hit not to be featured in this collection. That aside, pretty well everything else of his best work is here.

For me, his music works best when its melodic and melancholic. Check out the hurt in his voice in 'Operator (That's Not The Way It Feels) - for me the best of all his work - and you'll see what I mean. He even has the time to indulge in some insouciant humour under the pain viz. "She's living in LA, with my best old ex-friend Ray". Bitter-sweet doesn't do it justice. When he tries to be intentionally comedic (such as in 'Speedball Tucker' I feel he loses something.

The final seven tracks are those recorded with his wife Ingrid - their humanity comes out aplenty in '(The) Migrant Worker' and 'Railroad Song'. These tracks alone are worth the price of this collection.

Anyone who doesn't know (or has forgotten) his work should check this collection out.

5.0 out of 5 stars This one should be called 'Excellence in a Bottle', 22 Jan 2004
By A Customer
It was a recent television advert for a 4x4 vehicle that reminded me of Jim Croce and a vinyl album I owned many years ago. Immediate thought - check out Amazon and there it was!! Even better than the old vinyl, this had all the tracks I remembered and some amazing stuff as well (and with over 50 tracks, definitely EXCELLENT VALUE). It has caused a few arguments in the family though (as in 'I want the CD for the car today, I have a long journey' ..... 'No it's MINE, and I want to play it while I'm at home today'). Buy this one ..... You won't want to stop playing it!

Can't believe after all this time I have actually found my favourite Jim Croce tracks on CD. Easy listening and very nostalgic.
