5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome back Donnie - we've missed you, 3 Jan 2000
By c.ward@nbol.co.uk (Cryers Hill, Bucks, England) - See all my reviews
On The West Side deserves to be a roaring success - my problem was in tracking it down in shops with most saying it won't be in stock because it is not in the charts! How is it going to get in the charts if you don't sell it I said? From the very first play this album grabs your attention - mainly because of that superb voice. The title track is strong as is the cover of Donovan's Catch The Wind. Gaelic songs are well interspersed too and allow us to revel in extra vocals from Karen Matheson of Capercaillie plus others. The best tracks are Morning Light, Dark Eyes and Steve Earle's haunting Nothing But A Child with the best saved till last - The Garden Boy, culm inating in a Runrig style guitar play-out (you can almost picture Malcolm on stage playing this one. The CD's hardly been off the system. It's infectious and clearly deserves greater airplay so that more people can hear one of THE best voices in music today. A winner and friends will be receiving this as presents.

5.0 out of 5 stars DONNIE BOY, 13 April 2000
By A Customer
This album is a very powerful album from a great voice. Donovans song has powerful backingvocals by a young and upcoming singer from edinburgh Paul Dourley. He sounds great with donnie and also Holly Thomas on morining light leads to a very exciting album allround.Hope to see on tour with the band soon donnie.

3.0 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity, 29 Dec 1999
By C. Angell (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Donnie Munroe has one hell of a voice, but it's shame that the music doesn't reach the same heavenly standards. This album's main fault is the production, there's simply to much of it. Several songs simply don't know when to end and drag on for what seems likes ages with extended guitar solos and string arrangements. A good example of this over production is "Dark eyes", a great melody, but Munroe's voice is so swamped in reverb that the song is ruined. Other tracks feature overly complicated instumentation. This is no Runrig album, but as a showcase for one of the greatest voices to have emerged from Scotland, it's worth buying. Just don't expect the songs to stick in your memory!!
