Blige collaborates with numerous producers and songwriters like Lauryn Hill ("All That I Can Say"), Babyface ("Don't Waste Your Time", which also features vocalsfrom Aretha Franklin and Soulshack), and Karlin ("Time") tobring a more expansive sonic recipe to her music.
MARY is a dynamic, intricately arranged album that gives the singer a softer, more melodic sound than her tougher hip-hop sound of the early '90s. Now over two years old, the cracks are starting to show on Mary's self-titled 1999 effort. All That I Can Say still swelters in all it's Lauryn Hill-style glory, while Time sounds as fresh as ever. But Deep Inside, Sexy, Your Child and No Happy Holidays fall the wrong side of bland. Give Me You is Diane Warren by numbers while you feel as though I'm In Love and Memories never really get into gear. The Love I Never Had stands out as an example of her true talent (Read: 1995's My Life) and Beautiful Ones stands up well on it's own. Mary no longer feels like the glorious gem it once was: it's more like a nice pebble!!!

When My Life was released, great things were expected of Ms. Blige. However, her 1997 follow-up failed to deliver. Thanfully 1999's Mary did. Deserting Share My World's Rodney Jerkins in a wise move to work with My Life's producers again. Even more 70's influenced than that record, Mary, sees her back at her creative peak. The beautiful All That I Can Say washes over you like a tide on a summer's day, Beautiful One features some excellent guitar playing and one of Mary's most intruiging choruses, I'm In Love is about as mellow as you can get, she makes As work, Time is really Pastime Paradise II, and she and Aretha work wonders on Don't Waste Your Time. Two of the albums are real gems are The Love I Never Had and Your Child. The former a complex big band affair complete with immpassioned vocals and some great chord changes, while the latter is about as simple and emotional as Mary gets. My only real criticism is that a couple of the tracks are slightly bland (Sexy, Deep Inside, No Happy Holidays), Memories doesn't belong here (it should be on Share My World) and Not Lookin' doesn't live up to the standard set by K-Ci and Mary's first duet (I Don't Want To Do Anything). Overall, an album slightly less consistent than My Life, but with more highs.

Mary is the best [r&b] album at the moment. from the mellow, relaxed 'all that i can say' to the stevie wonder inspired 'time' to the 70's power gospel/disco anthem 'let no man put asunder'. this album is considerably influenced by stevie wonder; no bad thing and escalates way past the level set by her previous efforts, 'what's the 411?','my life' and 'share my world'. the best album ever !
