I think we have to be grateful that Mary is on the right track again. There can be no question that the album SHINE proved quite a change in direction for her style. This album can only be compared to BABES IN THE WOOD which is perhaps Marys best album. This album has the blend of easy-listening and creativity from her loyal songwriters Noel Brazil and Shane Howard. Simply wonderful. Recommended for new listeners as well as devotee of Mary Black.

After the dark, rock-edged sounds of "Shine", this album sees Mary Black getting back to what she's best known for: simple songs with acoustic instrumentation and that incredible purity of voice. Many of the songs are reminiscent of the classics from the No Frontiers and Babes era, but there's still something of a dark edge to even the most beautiful of the ballads which mark this out as the work of an older, maybe wiser Mary. Most of the material comes from Shane Howard and Noel Brazil, but a couple of "classic" cover versions have slipped in alongside - Neil Finn's "Fall At Your Feet" (actually doesn't really work for me, but maybe that's because I love the original so much) and Sting's "Fields of Gold" (done before the release of the Eva Cassidy version made it an obligatory warbly-women's folk ballad!). Best tracks for me? The beautiful "Speaking with the Angel", and the defiantly celebratory "Don't Say Okay" which is everything The Corrs try to be but never attain.

I'm a new fan who recently saw Mary at her concert in Salford. Brilliant (even if the sound system failed). Thankfully, this album includes many of the songs she sang. You can feel the emotion in her voice - Bless the Road, Moments - whilst others have a real sensual feel - Turning Away. I'll be looking for more of the same. Will add to my collection of contemporary women singers - Janis Ian and Eva Cassidy. All my friends who have heard it are buying copies.
