Product Description

Product Description

Fusing the agitated rhythms of the traditional Brazilian samba he grew up listening to with the American jazz style exploited by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd during the 1950s, Antonio Carlos Jobim hit upon a new musical form that became known as bossa nova. Wave, an instrumental collaboration on which Jobim displays his mastery of the piano, guitar and harpsichord, flutters along at an easy pace. With telling contributions from Urbie Green, Ron Carter and Claus Ogerman the melodies here are portraits of leisurely nights in Rio. The melancholic inflection of "Lamento" and confident stride of the title track are especially striking amongst the assorted lounge-room harmonies composed by the genius who brought us "The Girl from Ipanema". --George Lees

CD Description

Perhaps Antonio Carlos Jobim's best-known album, 1967's WAVE was Jobim's first release for his longtime producer Creed Taylor's special CTI imprint at A&M Records. In fact, it wasonly the label's second release--after Wes Montgomery's A DAY IN THE LIFE--and WAVE went a long way towards establishing both the sound and even the look of the fledging label. Playing guitar, piano and harpsichord on these 10 original instrumentals, Jobim is backed by a small combo and Claus Ogerman's usually tasteful but occasionally overbearing strings. The tracks are brief--over half are under three minutes--introducing a theme, coloring it with a few brief solos and a lot of solid ensemble playing, and then fading. The overall mood is mellow without being sleepy, and as a whole, WAVE is a soothing, almost intoxicating delight. While it's probablynot Jobim's best album, it's certainly one of his most offhandedly entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Wave" is a towering achievement from the bossa nova's legendary master, 17 May 2009

Antônio Carlos Jobim [1927 - 1994] is one of the musicians at the heart of bossa nova's emergence at the turn of the sixties. His numerous beautiful melodies have become part of the standard song repertoire throughout the world. He forever is a musical icon of Brazilian music.

Jobim gained notoriety through his involvement, alongside Luiz Bonfá and poet Vinícius de Moraes on what became the soundtrack for Marcel Camus' awards winning movie "Orfeu Negro" Black Orpheus from 1959. When João Gilberto's, who played a unique guitar style and sang expressively muted vocals, became popular with songs from Jobim/de Moraes, the bossa nova craze began.

Worldwide success and fame came after the 1964 worldwide success of
Jobim's own "Girl from Ipanema", which he recorded with jazz saxophonist Stan Getz, João and Astrud Gilberto Getz/Gilberto. This recording also launched Astrud Gilberto's career as a singer The Very Best Of.

Wave's beautiful and haunting album cover depicts a distant giraffe movinga in a green and turquoise deserted landscape.

On this recording, Jobim reunites with talented conductor Claus Ogerman who already arranged Jobim's first solo Verve album The Composer of Desafinado Plays from 1963. Ogerman conducts a 17-piece orchestra playing lush, unison string lines and is responsible for the subtle arrangements which impart a full and warm sound to "Wave".

Jobim's forte is as a composer. His compositions mix musical delicacy, sophisticated melodic hooks, subtle rhythms, modern harmony and the ability to evoke complex moods. This album features ten absolutely first-rate instrumental tunes (save for vocals on "Lamento"). They still sound as fresh today as when they were released.

Jobim plays elegant, simple piano lines and subdued rhythm guitar (often overdubbing one on top of the other) except on "Antigua" where he plays electric harpsichord and guitar and on "Dialogo" which features guitar only. He contributes sad, endearing vocals to the moody "Lamento".

The influence of American West Coast "cool jazz" is reflected by the unusual, but exquisite, blend of trombones (played by Urbie Green and Jimmy Cleveland) and flutes (played by Ray Beckentstein, Romeo Penque and Jerome Richardson). I find that this specific combination of wind instruments is often overlooked when the music on this album is reviewed. Jazz player Joseph Singer adds French horn parts. The latter instrument serves as a reminder of the fact that Jobim was an admirer of French impressionists Debussy and Ravel who featured that instrument in some of their classical compositions.

Ron Carter is solid as ever on stand-up bass. Of course, the music is bathed in typical soft bossa nova rhythms provided by three percussionists.

All the above elements coalesce in a completely convincing marriage of form and content: an emotional depth wedded to a pleasing musical substance in a way indicativee of a pretty rare level of intelligence.

"Wave" is, in my opinion, the highlight of Jobim's career. there is not a single weak track in this masterpiece. The whole album can be enjoyed from beginning to end, although I would give special mention to the title track, "Batidinha", "Triste", "Mojave" and "Antigua".

The album was recorded in the USA, engineered by the famed Rudy Van Gelder and produced by Creed Taylor. Both names are associated with sound quality of the highest order. My only caveat is that my sadly long gone US vinyl sounded better than the CD under review. This CD uses the early 1988 digital masters. At this time, the existing analog-to-digital technique was a limiting factor as regards sound reproduction. The sound of this CD will, for sure, neither rob you from the emotions emanating from the music nor hurt your ears. However, there are a lot of subtle details and shadings that are tamed whilst the dynamic range feels restricted if you are using use a quality audio system.

I recently heard (and bought) the 2007 Japanese remaster featuring the rarer "red" cover art Wave. This new edition (which adds bonus tracks) seems to remove veils of gauze that stood between you and the musicians. Like all Japanese imports, it is also much more expensive and subject to sudden disappearance.

Whatever your budget, please consider listening to and/or acquiring this album if you like Brazilian music.
