Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The Soweto String Quartet's name suggests the "counterpoint" between black political revolution in South Africa and the white European musical establishment's most refined ensemble form. At first thought an unmarketable entity by both British and South African promoters, the group scooped a handful of gongs at the South African Music Awards in 1995 and has never looked back. Rhythms of Africa is the SSQ's fourth disc, marking the 10th anniversary of Nelson Mandela's release. Perhaps like Mandela, the SSQ is doomed to the eternal role of ambassador; by and large this juxtaposition of African and classical music is pop music, yet always global in the sense that it crosses all barriers. From the very first bar of the opening track "Imbube", it is clear that this is something different.

The disc is essentially a compilation album of tracks from former releasesZebra Crossing,Renaissance andMillennia, but there are also a few new acquaintances, such as the buoyant "Shut Up and Listen" and the stirring "Writing on the Wall". Rhythms of Africa is an optimistic celebration of the players themselves and of the relatively fragile new freedom of their homeland. --Yngvil V G

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful music - but no 'Millennia', 3 Dec 2007
By Mr. F. L. Dunkin Wedd - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This is an excellent introduction to the Sowetos, being a compilation of various items from previous albums. The group's name itself is brilliant, with its culture-clash combination of South Africa's most famous black township and Western Europe's most high-art genre.

And the music works just like you'd imagine. Take Zebra Crossing: the intro features string quartet playing of a mainly conventional kind and with a good full tone. There is just a bit more sliding than your average string quartet to give you a clue... And then the beat comes in - irresistibly African. Now try to stop yourself tapping your foot or boogieing around the dining-room!

One word of warning however.

Since Eliza Manningham-Buller's Desert Island Discs, I have twice been asked how to get hold of the track she chose 'Millennia'. It is listed on the Desert Island Discs website thus: 'CD Title Rhythms of Africa / Track 1 / Label WRASSE / Rec No 74321684542'.

The CD reviewed here, however, is from RCA Victor and DOES NOT INCLUDE the track 'Millennia' - although it is otherwise identical. Compare with the listing on Amazon.de - ASIN: B0000258LL which is from Catalyst (Sony BMG).

How confusing is that?!

5.0 out of 5 stars The African Heartbeat!, 8 Feb 2003
This amazing collection of the Soweto String Quartet's finest works brings to the mind's eye the sights, sounds and feelings that the Affrican people experience. Thier songs, each about a different emotion, and their everyday life. The SSQ. have managed to reproduce, not only some of Paul Simon's songs, but many others to the rhythm and the heartbeat of Africa.
if you are looking to find out more about african sounds, or to hear and experience that string quartets don't only play classical peices, then i recomend this. enjoy listening! x

5.0 out of 5 stars Soweto String Quartet Rythms of Africa, 1 Feb 2009
This has real feel good music on it and some tunes that you've heard before in different guises. But mainly I have bought several copies of it because it sends my baby to sleep. We put it on and put her in our arms and jig away to the beat and all but the most severe tantrum is literally gone in a matter of seconds. I now give a copy of it to all my friends who have babies.
