Product Description

CD Description
Blackmore's Night features the talents of guitarist RitchieBlackmore and vocalist Candice Night. Blackmore is best known for his work with the rock band Rainbow, and before that, the legendary group Deep Purple. However he has long since been interested in mediaeval and Renaissance music.
On UNDER A VIOLET MOON, Blackmore and Night blend together acoustic pop with English mediaeval music. To add an air of authenticity, they employ such instruments as a hurdy-gurdy, bagpipes, pennywhistles, and vintage tambourines. However, Blackmore's guitar is the backbone of this music, and he accompanies Night with unerring sensitivity. Night sings in a relaxedmezzo-soprano on each piece. Most of all, listeners will enjoy following the lyrics, since each tune is centred on an exciting mediaeval tale. Highlights include the war song "March the Heroes Home", the wistful "Castles and Dreams", and the forlorn "Catherine Howard's Fate". On the latter, Night sings of heartbreak, betrayal, and lovesickness. Even though this melody is antiquated, and the lyric is sung in Middle English, this story is wholly universal. UNDER A VIOLET MOON is the perfect album for those who wish to dabble in light, non-academic period music.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best so far in English revival folk/rock, 9 Aug 2000
By A Customer
Tapping into English folk without too much of the fiddle-de-dee, Blackmore's renditions of some great English music with enough rock influence to give it zap, and not forgetting the to-die-for vocals from Candice, this hopefully heralds the arrival of something very new in the UK music scene.

Beautiful lyrics (especially 'Now and Then')and enough haunting melody to conjure images of magical medievalism, this music is definitely food for the soul for tree huggers, 70's throwbacks, pagans and those looking for a new England.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magical maestro pauses for refreshment, 26 Nov 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Under A Violet Moon (Audio CD)
This is a more restrained Blackmore, gone is the posturing, the enfant terrible. Here we have, often, the complementing of haunting medieval moods, wind, bells, the acoustic guitar. To all those parents who listened second hand to Ritchie's electric furies via the living room floor, absorb this eclectic beauty. If the electric guitar at the end of 'Gone with the Wind' does not make your spine tingle then you very well may be dead.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Journey Continues, 1 Nov 2002
By Duncan Barnett (Durham, England) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Under a Violet Moon (Audio CD)
Those, who like me. have basked in the brilliance of Richie Blackmore for a number of years were overawed with the brilliance and deliacy of Shadow of the Moon, were taken one step further with the second Blackmores Night album.

Under a Violet Moon carries us into a world full of subtle instrumentals, powerful guitar work and a wide variation of vocals. Richie and Candice, between them, have a unique chemistry which is rarely to be found.

Richie Blackmore has once again proved his brilliance and virtuosity in this album, showing yet another side of his apparently limitless talent.

I feel that it is impossible to single out individual tracks for mention, as all the tracks on this album differ greatly and are worth listening to.
