4.0 out of 5 stars jimmy delivers a fantastic album!, 15 Oct 2006

(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
this jimmy album has a very homo-erotic cover....will the music live up to jimmy history?

"here i am" is magnificent, huge and epic and magnificent..if you like "smalltown boy" you'll love it

"lay down" has a sexy beat and toungue-in-cheek lyrics..another great song! "dark sky" is a bit darker and atmospheric..still brilliant!

"my life" slows it down and it plods along..but goes nowhere! "something to live for" picks up the dance beat again and sounds like "i feel love"
bronski did with marc almond.

"this must be love" slows it down again and is a bit of a plod along album track. "girl falling down" is guitar based and it is wonderful..beuatiful lyrics and a beautiful song!

"someday soon" is a typical jimmy catchy pop song..great! "eve" follows on nicely...jimmy lowers his voice for the verses and builds them up for the choruses..great!

"stone" worried me a bit at the begining but it picks up into a jaunty little nuber..not a stand out track..but still good!

the album closes with "rolling" a beautiful simple but amazing song for its uplifting lyrics and melody...probably the stand out track!

to sum up the album..its very very good...vocally and lyrically it is wonderful! as with any album there are a few weaker tracks..but jimmy delivers an album that will please bronski fans..he has a niche between erasure and soft cell..and it fits perfectly!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Put the first half on auto-replay, skip the second half, 30 May 2000
By A Customer
This independent label effort from Jimmy Somerville is the companion piece to last year's don't-blink-or-you'll-miss-it single release of 'Lay Down', which was in and out of shops' lower shelves within what seemed like a mere week. Having received virtually no press upon it's release in the summer of 1999, most potential listeners (meaning fans of Bronski Beat's and Jimmy's 80's and early 90's ouput) might not even be aware of this album's existence. I certainly wasn't, until stumbling across it by accident. The album starts off with three very strong, bouncy, upbeat tracks on which Jimmy's falsetto in its usual excellent form. Track 3, 'Dark Sky' is easily the album's strongest moment and even though some people may already know this from its 1997 (!) single release, it is good to see it included here again. This Haiku-like seven-line lyric wrapped in glorious hypnotic trance and Hi-NRG beats rounded off by spot-on production will leave you feeling positively elated! If you were not lucky or quick enough to grab a copy of the single three years ago, here's your chance to catch up. Things continue in nice fashion on the next two tracks: positive, life-affirming ballad 'My Life' and ballad-turning-to-disco-stomper 'Something to live for', both helped along by strong memorable melodies and some intriguing lyrcis. Unfortunately things go a bit downhill from here. Where track 6 (This must be love) is simply instantly forgettable, track 7 (Girl falling down) is just plain embarrassing in its earnestness and PC'ness, tackling not one, not two, but three 'heavy' topics in its exceedingly weak musical and textual confines (domestic abuse, abortion, suicide). If this was meant to inspire in the listener any sort of 'awareness' or to get us thinking, it has achieved the opposite, namely a quick hit of the skip button on the remote. Among the melodic sameness and blandness of the album's final few tracks, 'Eve' is the lone standout, giving you a rare chance to hear Jimmy attempt a baritone (bass even?) singing voice, the track being helped along by a jaunty little tune. Jimmy would have been well advised to include a few more upbeat dance tracks and fewer attempts at balladeering on this. As it is, 'Manage the Damage' is on the whole a well-meaning but rather uneven effort. But since the first half of the album is easily worth the price of admission alone, I'll give it a 4 out of 5.
