Susumu Yokota gets a jump on millennium fever and gives us a taste of things to come. If December 31, 1999 is as jubilant as his brilliant 1999 album, we're in for the mother of all parties as the calendar does the triple-zero back flip and the book slams shut on the second millennium. Yokota's boogie-down production jumbles the most disco-dated of synth riffs, familiar hooks, exotic Eastern melodies, digital cut-and-pastework, irrepressible bass, and pumping rhythms.
Such astronomically funky tracks as "I Am Ra Ra Ra", "Hurry Up To Planet Melon", and "On & On" are lovingly crafting from the pop detritus of the polyester generation and the Regan years. But 1999's decadent grooves and retro flavour can't hide the fact that a real master is at work. Yokota brings suchelegance to "Future Memory" and "Galactic Form" that every string sting is an alleluia, every piano cascade is an Amen,and each beat takes you higher, higher, higher. The synth symphony of "Endless" is just a nightcap on the final rhythmic rapture of the 20th Century. If 1999 doesn't have you shaking your groove-thang well into the next millennium, you should check your pulse.
